The Specialized 2FO Roost is a sleek lightweight enduro shoe that comes in several colors and is priced right, so I really wanted to like them. Unfortunately, during testing, I uncovered several issues that have left me feeling disappointed.
For years I had been wearing the Shimano AM9s, but with the recent price increase I decided to give these 2FOs a shot. As I stated above, I love the design and colorway options, so when they arrived and felt out how light they were and how comfortable they looked I was excited to get these out on the trail.
Right from the start I felt strangely off balance. Specialized uses their Body Geometry footbed which raises the arch of your foot and that took some time to get used too. I also struggled to get clipped into the pedals which is something that I continue to battle with to this day. But eventually I got used to the nuances of the shoe.
Unfortunately, over the next few months I uncovered two major drawbacks, breathability and durability.
Riding on the east coast during the summer months means humid rides and the lack of breathability became apparently pretty quickly. Only would they let moisture in, but they also held on to it like a sponge. By the end of the ride, you were often left with soggy feet, which is not ideal.

But perhaps more concerning was the durability. After a few months of riding, I began noticing the rubber tread separating from the shoe. I applied some Shoe Goo to repair it, however I continue to lose chucks of rubber, especially near the cutout. To be clear, this kind of breakdown can be expected over time, but not after 3 months!
I know I’m coming down hard on these shoes, but I was really disappointed. I suppose if you lived in a cooler climate and did not have to walk around much in these shoes, they could be a good option. In fact, the lightweight and stiffness could make for a good enduro racing shoe.
As for me, I will not be buying these shoes again and would have a hard time recommending them to anyone. So, if you have any suggestions for a good lightweight enduro style shoe with clips let me know in the comments below.
