This place surprised me! Short but technical trail run at Monocacy Hill filled with abandon structures, rock scrambles, and a beautiful overlook.
If you live in the Berks area and you are looking for a short, interesting and technical trail run or hike, Monocacy Hill in Birdsboro PA has got you covered. There are ruins of an abandoned quarry mill scattered along the Lower trail. A stunning overlook at the top of the Monocacy Hill trail. And huge boulders to play on off the Creek trail.
There are about 8 miles of trail here, but I focused on two loops. Starting at the lot I made my way down Geiger Rd and entered the Lower trail on the left. You will see the old ruins on your right about 500ft down trail. Continue on and bare right on to the Railbed trail.
The second half begins to climb about 200 ft. At the next intersection hang a left and then a quick right on to the Monocacy Hill trail. This trail is steep and full of tech, but you are rewarded with a beautiful overlook close to the top. Continue on pass the overlook and there are a few more techy rock gardens to clear before you start descending.

At the bottom make a right on to the Creek trail where you will see some huge boulders about 200ft down the trail on your left. Continue on the down the Creek trail as it will begin to drop elevation until you reach the creek at the bottom.
Eventually it will start to gradually climb back up where you will see an intersection for the Stonewall trail, make a right. Stonewall will yield on to the Lower trail which will take you back to the lot.
In total, my route ended up being about 4.5 miles with 750ft of elevation. If you are interested in the route, check out my Strava below or the AllTrails page.
